The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) updated outlook for this year’s El Niño event has sent shockwaves through climate circles, with forecast models predicting the strongest on record. While its impact will be fleeting, the implications of this “super” El Niño are long-term.
Berkeley Earth’s Zeke Hausfather has analyzed the data and found that 2027 could see global temperatures soar to unprecedented levels, with a 95% chance that it will become the hottest year on record. At the upper end of this range, we’re looking at temperatures that wouldn’t be seen again until around 2040 – effectively fast-forwarding our warming trend by about 13 years.
El Niño’s impact on global temperature is rooted in its ability to release vast amounts of heat into the atmosphere as sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean skyrocket. This phenomenon is exacerbated by human-driven warming, which is already pushing temperatures upward. The temporary nature of El Niño’s heating effect can be misleading: even though it will eventually subside, its influence on long-term climate records is undeniable.
The historical temperature record bears witness to this. Take the strong El Niño of 2023 as an example. It played a significant role in making 2024 the hottest year on record. La Niña’s subsequent cooling effect might have brought global temperatures down briefly, but it didn’t erase the accumulated warming from greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
This pattern has created what appears to be a rising staircase in the historical temperature record: El Niño years causing spikes in global average temperature, followed by temporary cool-downs during La Niña events. The lesson here is stark: even as we experience brief respite from El Niño’s direct influence, human emissions are steadily adding a permanent “El Niño worth of heat” to the climate system each decade.
The forecast for 2027 – and indeed our future – looks increasingly dire. If carbon emissions continue at their current pace, the temperatures we’re on track to experience soon will become the norm. What’s most concerning is that this new reality won’t be limited to exceptional El Niño events. As greenhouse gases accumulate in the atmosphere, the net long-term effect of these cycles becomes amplified warming.
The world is witnessing a fundamental shift: our climate is becoming more volatile, with natural fluctuations exacerbated by human activity. This is no longer a prediction – it’s an inevitability.
